Dear John Rivers: please open an upscale steakhouse. Soon. I think everyone who attended last week’s Chef’s Night at Second Harvest would wholeheartedly agree with this plea to the barbecue master. Last week the 4 Rivers team took their talents to Mercy Drive to serve up an exquisite five course meal in support of Second Harvest Food Bank’s Culinary Training Program – an incredible course that teaches employable culinary and life skills to at-risk adults in our community.

The Culinary Training Program provides qualified, at-risk and economically disadvantaged adults with the culinary and life skills training needed to pursue a sustainable career in the food industry. Students enrolled in the program gain hands-on experience while learning valuable skills in Second Harvest’s production kitchen.

These culinary students along with John Rivers and team whipped up an incredible five course meal last week served along wine provided by The Capital Grille. Here’s what we tasted and thoroughly enjoyed:

Appetizer: Shrimp Stuffed Fried Green Tomato with Bread and Butter Pickles and Watermelon Rind Relish. I don’t know how you stuff a fried green tomato, but I’m still craving this delight. From the breading to the garnish, everything about this dish was perfection. I vote for this starter to make an appearance on The Coop’s menu!

First Course: Low Country Shrimp and Grits with Florida Rock Shrimp, Stone-Ground Grits and a Spicy Tasso Reduction. The delectable southern classic was even served alongside some Crystal hot sauce. 4 Rivers, you really did cover all your southern basis with this dish.

Second Course: Smokehouse Sideboard with Smoke Angus Brisket, Mangalitsa Baby Back Rib and Shoulder, Skillet Cornbread and Southern Collard Greens. A classic John Rivers plate and this version did not disappoint. This trio of meat was like a barbecue symphony parading around on my tastebuds!

Third Course: Coffee-Rubbed Rib-Eye Steak with Cabernet Reduction, Gruyere Mash and Maple-Glazed Brussels. Thinly slice and loaded with flavor thanks to the coffee rub, I sure hope this makes an appearance on the 4 Rivers menu soon!

Fourth Course: Double Chocolate Brioche Pudding with Bacon infused Creme Anglaise Salted Caramel and Bourbon-Infused Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Talk about the best combination of ingredients ever. This sweet, salty, savory final course was the perfect ending to an exceptional evening.

And in May, Chef Kevin Fonzo of K Restaurant, will serve up what is sure to be another incredible Chef’s Night at Second Harvest. Stay tuned for more details!

On Saturday, March 7, at the Orlando World Center Marriott, top local chefs from acclaimed restaurants and resorts will showcase their creativity to help raise funds at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida’s Appetite for the Arches benefit. This is a culinary event with a twist — one that has a little something to do with the Golden Arches.

Chefs will use fresh McDonald’s ingredients to create one-of-a-kind signature dishes. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with participating chefs while sampling the gourmet creations at this free-flowing event.

Julie Petrakis, who owns The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder with her husband James, sits on the planning committee for the event and was in charge of organizing chef participation. “Appetite for the Arches unites Central Florida’s best chefs and the community on a night of culinary surprises and delight for a special cause. All proceeds from the gala help Ronald McDonald House keep families together when they need it most —during the treatment of a critically ill child.”

It’s the weekend and that means fall football! As University of Georgia alumni our Saturdays revolve around kick-offs and game day plans. We’re constantly searching for the best sports bars filled with tasty bites, oversized televisions and a social atmosphere. Here’s our picks for Orlando’s best sports bars, happy game day!

  • Duffy’s Sports Grill:Boasting over 100 televisions and Florida roots, Duffy’s menu features freshly prepared ingredients and a menu for everyone’s palate in your party.  Signature favorites include BBQ Baby Back Ribs, ½ lb. Certified Angus Beef Burgers, and 15 dishes containing fewer than 580 calories.  Even better Duffy’s offers 2-for-1 drinks all day, every day, on everything from the bar, including top-shelf cocktails, premium wine andbottled beer. Located near the Mall at Millenia and now open in Lake Mary!
  • Gators Dockside: This family-friendly restaurants offers big screen telvisions, pool tables, video games (Pacman anyone?) and an expansive menu. Their signature grilled wings are flavored with your choice of 15 different sauces and their ribs are made from scratch. We’re fond of the Baldwin Park location and its lake view, plus your little ones can run around and play old school video games.
  • The Porch: In full disclosure we’ve yet to visit this budding Winter Park restaurant, but we’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from friends and colleagues! Rumor has it this place is loud, but serves up fabulous food like the Early Rise with cheddar cheese, house hash cake, bacon, fried egg, crispy onions and liquid gold BBQ wedged between a fresh glazed donut. That’s right a DONUT.
  • CaddyShanks: There’s a little bit of everything here, CaddyShanks is loaded with big screens, hundreds of beers, virtual golf and racing simulators PLUS ping pong and Wii. Their extensive menu is provided by surrounding restaurants so there’s something for whatever you’re craving.
  • Your Sofa: Well, if all else fails and sweatpants are calling your name, pick up a Mellow Mushroom pizza and settle into your sofa for an uber lazy afternoon.

Go Dawgs!
